Iowa Electrathon

Alliant Energy is proud to sponsor the Iowa Electrathon, a program for high school students in which they design, build, fund, test, and compete with a working electric vehicle.

Electrathon cars

The student-built cars are small one-person electric vehicles with limited battery capacity. When undertaking an Electrathon project, students devise highly technical ways to construct an efficient running electric vehicle.

After competing and test-driving, students go back to the drawing boards to improve their car to beat - or in some cases, even compete with - other Electrathon teams.

The goal of the Iowa Electrathon is to bring attention to the environmental problems of conventional cars and to demonstrate the viability of electrics. The program provides a means of teaching young people how to evaluate alternatives and make sustainable lifestyle choices, and uses a problem-solving discipline to design and build an efficient vehicle, all in a hands-on and team oriented approach.
