Increased Tax Credits for 2009-2010 Energy-Efficient Improvements and Renewable Energy Systems
Homeowners, home builders and businesses can qualify for tax credits for energy-efficiency and renewable energy improvements. In February of 2009, Congress passed a piece of economic legislation extending the shelf life of the Energy Policy Act of 2005. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), also known as the recent economic stimulus bill, expanded many of these tax credits and their time limits.

Clock-Programmable thermostats

The next time you are visiting with a customer, ask if he or she has a clock-programmable thermostat at home. It's one of the most affordable and effective things customers can do to save energy and money. Plus, Alliant Energy-IP&L offers a $25 cash rebate on all qualifying CPTs. Here are some talking points:

When used properly, CPTs can save the average customer $100 or more each year on their utility bill.

  • CPTs automatically adjust the temperature, allowing customers to save energy while they are away or sleeping.
  • CPTs are more convenient and accurate than manual thermostats.
  • CPTs do not contain toxic mercury (found in some manual thermostats).
  • CPTs can reduce energy consumption and as a result, are good for the environment.
  • The customer is always in control - he or she can manually override a programmed temperature at any time.
  • Programming a CPT can be a bit daunting for a customer. Offer to help out with these critical steps. While you are doing so, explain the basic functions:

  • Menu
  • Setting date and time
  • Program review
  • Changing programs
  • Fan settings
  • Manual temperature override
  • If you have any questions about CPTs and the $25 cash rebate (for Iowa and Minnesota customers only), please contact your Trade Account Manager.
