Restraining Your Pets

You can help make the job safer for meter readers and service technicians by keeping your pets inside, or restraining them away from the meters. Even the friendliest pooch can become an aggressive guard dog when a stranger comes around.

Alliant Energy field workers follow our strict animal restraint policy to confrontations that might results in injury:

• Utility employees will not step foot on your property if a dog or other potentially dangerous animal is not clearly restrained.
• Animals must be restrained by a leash or chain anchored to a permanent fixture, caged, or secured away from the meter or work area.
• Animals being held by their owners are not considered restrained.

If you cannot secure your animals, you can read your own meter on a monthly basis.

If you have installed – or plan to install - an invisible pet fence, please contact our Customer Service Center so we may note it on your account. This is to protect you, the homeowner, from liability, and protect our meter readers from potential dog bite injuries.

Gas leaks or other emergency situations require employees to use their best judgment to make conditions safe and prevent injury to our employees or the public.
