Utility Moratorium on disconnections ends April 15

Customers behind on bills encouraged to call 1-800-327-2708 for payment options

MADISON, WI – April 8, 2008 – Wisconsin Power and Light Company (WPL), an Alliant Energy company, encourages customers who are not current on their utility bills to take action prior to April 15, by sending a payment, using the convenient phone payment option, making a payment arrangement by phone or talking to a customer service representative by calling 1-800-327-2708.

As of April 1, 2008, approximately 65,000 WPL customers are in arrears, up slightly from last year. The total dollar amount owed is more than $20 million. Approximately 6,000 customers did not pay anything during the winter heating season, with $5.2 million owed by these customers. Those numbers are both an increase from last year.

“We know higher natural gas prices made this a difficult heating season for many of our customers,” says Julie Bauer, Director of Customer Service for Alliant Energy. “We offer a number of bill payment options to ease the burden and can work out bill payment arrangements for our customers on a case-by-case basis.”

“To address the significant phone volume that occurs this time of year, WPL has several self service options available, such as online payment, pay by phone options and automated payment arrangements,” Bauer adds. “In addition, we can help our customers get in touch with community action agencies which distribute energy assistance dollars.”

WPL also has customer service representatives who are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to discuss payment options. To make payment arrangements with WPL now, call 1-800-327-2708. Customers may also locate their local community action agency to discuss energy assistance by calling the Wisconsin Home Energy Plus Hotline at 1-866-432-8947.
