Alliant Energy reminds customers to be ‘security-smart’ this spring

Customers should report suspicious activity to local authorities

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – April 16, 2008 – As spring finally arrives, Alliant Energy reminds its customers to be alert for any suspicious activities in their area. Customers need to stay ‘security-smart’ by practicing the following tips:

  • Beware of the possibility of imposters posing as Alliant Energy workers. Alliant Energy workers dispatched in your area will NOT require payment to avoid disconnects or to restore electric service or trim trees that are impacting electric service.
  • Do NOT provide personal or financial information if you are not certain the ‘worker’ is from Alliant Energy. Please contact 1-800-ALLIANT if you are uncertain if the worker if from Alliant Energy.
  • Customers approached by utility workers should ask to see an official Alliant Energy identification card or badge. Utility workers who are assisting Alliant Energy’s restoration efforts after storms will also have official identification.
  • Alliant Energy does NOT contact electricians on behalf of customers to make wiring or electrical repairs on your home or business in order to have electric service restored.
  • Call 1-800-ALLIANT to verify the situation and report suspicious persons or activities.
  • Contact local law enforcement immediately to report suspicious activity.
  • Write down license numbers and description of suspicious persons or vehicles.
  • If possible, keep an eye on your neighbors’ property and report suspicious activity.

“It is critical that our customers stay safe as our company restores electric service after storms or are working in the area on other electric projects,” states Vern Gebhart, Vice President of Customer Operations-West. “We appreciate our customers’ support of our efforts and ask that they stay alert to any suspicious activity during the spring and throughout the year.”

Alliant Energy customers experiencing an electric outage or that may have other electric service questions are encouraged to call 1-800-ALLIANT (1-800-255-4268).
