What is environmental stewardship?

In this focus area, we look for programs that safeguard natural resources and wildlife — especially when those resources are threatened or endangered.

We want everyone to be able to enjoy the natural beauty of Iowa and Wisconsin, which means caring for nature on behalf of future generations.

Examples of these efforts include conservation, education, and park updates. Our One Million Trees initiative is another great example of this work. 

Why do we support environmental stewardship? 

Alliant Energy and the Alliant Energy Foundation are dedicated to six core values that guide everything we do.

Our environmental stewardship efforts support our core values to act for tomorrow and make things better.  

What are we doing in this focus area? 

Below are some of our annual investments that impact the environmental stewardship focus area. Many of these investments also offer our employees an opportunity to give back and engage in the communities we serve.  

 We support programs that involve:

Recent environmental stewardship community initiatives

    Our One Million Trees initiative’s Community Tree Planting program gives organizations grants of up to $5,000 to plant trees. Here are photos from a tree planting in the town of Beloit, Wisconsin, in the spring of 2022, when 27 trees were planted at the McKearn Park Fire Station.

    In the spring of 2022, 51 shade trees were planted in Burlington, Iowa, with a grant from our Community Tree Planting program.

    In the spring of 2022, 34 trees were planted in Clinton, Iowa, with a grant from our Community Tree Planting program.

    As part of our One Million Trees Residential Tree program, we helped fund 250 landscaping trees for community members in Decorah, Iowa, in 2022.

    Ten counties across Iowa gained pollinator plots thanks to support from the Alliant Energy Foundation as well as a partnership with Keep Iowa Beautiful, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, and 4-H. These plots will support creatures who move pollen, making Iowa an even more beautiful place to live.

    Alliant Energy crews worked with Friends of Lake Kegonsa (FOLKS) Wildlife Committee in Stoughton, Wisconsin, to keep ospreys safe with new habitat platforms. Ospreys tend to build their nests near water on the highest perch they can find, which sometimes is a transmission or distribution pole. We install platforms near electric poles where nests are found to serve as alternative nesting sites for these birds.

    Alliant Energy employees worked with the Clean Lakes Alliance to remove invasive buckthorn in Pheasant Branch in Middleton during the summer of 2022.
