How do I qualify?
You must be an active Alliant Energy electric customer.
What size refrigerators and freezers do you accept?
Units must be larger than 10 cubic feet, but not commercial sizes. We accept typical, standard home refrigerators and freezers.
What is the incentive?
We offer $50 per appliance for up to four appliances (two refrigerators and two freezers) per account.
Why does the appliance have to be working?
We only accept refrigerators or freezers with motors that run and cool because our goal is to remove extra energy use from the grid. If the refrigerator has already stopped working, it is no longer able to draw power from the grid.
What is recycled from refrigerators and freezers?
Typically, up to 95% of an appliance’s materials are recycled, including copper, steel, aluminum, glass, plastic, insulation, oil and refrigerant. Refrigerant is either reused or disposed of in an environmentally friendly accepted practice.
Why don’t you accept commercial sizes?
Commercial sizes are not within this program's scope. Commercial sizes can require additional equipment and more labor to recycle.
I bought a new appliance through a store, and the store already hauled away my old one. Did the store get my incentive? Is it still possible for me to get the incentive?
We don’t recycle appliances from stores. We only pay the incentive to qualifying customers who schedule pickup through our Appliance Recycling program. If a store has already hauled away your appliance, we can’t recycle it for you or give you an incentive, and neither will we recycle it on behalf of the store or pay the store an incentive.
