Hydro generation

A proud history and a wave of the future

Our history is strongly tied to hydropower generation, and it continues to be an important part of our diverse energy mix offering reliable renewable energy.

The mighty Wisconsin River has powered our hydroelectric dams for over 100 years. In fact, many Wisconsinites first experienced home electricity thanks to hydropower generation.

These dams prove alternative, renewable energy sources are resilient and consistently provide reliable renewable electricity to our customers.

We own 50% interest in the Wisconsin River Power Company, which operates the Petenwell and Castle Rock Dams on the Wisconsin River. We also have purchased power agreements with other hydroelectric facilities across Wisconsin and Iowa.

Dam safety

Safety is a number one priority for our company. This extends to visitors choosing to boat, fish and walk near our dams. To avoid placing yourself or loved ones at risk when you’re spending time around a dam:

  • Never pass through fences, buoys, booms or barriers. They are there to protect you.
  • Be cognizant and obey all warning sirens and audio messages. They activate when river levels rise and when there is an emergency.
  • Stay back from the edge above and below hydroelectric dams.
  • Never stand below a dam or anchor or tie your boat there. As river levels rise, dam operators may spill excess water through a dam. This can cause river levels and the current to change quickly. Currents can also change below the surface of the water without warning or cause.
