Alliant Energy® Smart Hours for Wisconsin customers

Sign up and sync

You can enroll in the summer or winter season or both, depending on your heating and cooling equipment. Once you sign up, our technology learns your regular heating and cooling settings from your smart thermostat so we can keep you comfortable on event days.

Smart Hours events

We schedule Smart Hours events on a few extremely hot or cold days each season when we expect energy demand will spike. On these days, we’ll heat or cool your home before the predicted energy spike, then reduce your use slightly during the Smart Hours event to flatten the energy spike and keep energy prices down.

Stay in control

We’ll get in touch a day before each Smart Hours event. We’ll never adjust your settings on nonevent days.

If your home’s temperature ever fluctuates more than a few degrees during Smart Hours events, your heater or air conditioner will kick in to get you back to your preferred temperature.

You’re always in control. You can always adjust your own thermostat, but know that by doing so you opt out of that event. You may not earn rewards if you opt out of too many events.

We will schedule a maximum of 15 Smart Hours events each season (summer runs June 1 to Sept. 30, and winter is Dec. 1 to March 31). We will rarely reduce your energy use for more than four hours, and never on weekends or holidays. For more information, visit our FAQ.

Who is eligible? 

• You must be an Alliant Energy residential customer in Wisconsin.
• Your home must have at least one eligible Wi-Fi-enabled smart thermostat (limit one enrollment bonus per household). See which brands we support.
• You need a Wi-Fi network that is always on.
• Homes with a central air conditioner connected to a smart thermostat are eligible to participate in our summer program.
• Homes with a central air conditioner and a gas or electric furnace connected to a smart thermostat are eligible to participate in both summer and winter seasons.

Sign up and sync

When you sign up, you enroll in the summer and winter seasons. Once you sign up, our technology will learn your hot water usage patterns so you have plenty of hot water during Smart Hours events.

Smart Hours events

A few times each season, when the weather gets extremely hot or cold and we expect the demand for energy will spike, we’ll schedule a Smart Hours event. On these days, we’ll adjust your smart water heater controller to reduce your energy use a little during the Smart Hours event, flattening the energy spike and keeping energy prices down.

Stay in control

We’ll let you know in advance when we plan Smart Hours events, and we’ll never adjust your settings on nonevent days.

During Smart Hours events, if your water heater’s hot water reserve dips below the minimum threshold, we’ll send a signal to heat more water.

You’re always in control. If you need to, you can always adjust your water heater settings manually or through the manufacturer’s app, but know that by doing so, you opt out of that event. You may not earn seasonal rewards if you opt out of too many events.

The program generally won’t have any effect on your day-to-day life. We only work with your water heater during Smart Hours events, and we’ll notify you beforehand so you know when they’re coming.
