Phelps Pet Products announced its lease of a 178,000-square-foot industrial building in Janesville, Wisconsin, that will be home to a meaty, jerky-style dog treat facility. Working with Milwaukee-based developer Zilber Property Group, Phelps will employ up to 103 people by 2024 and invest around $20 million to outfit the facility. The new facility will allow Phelps to expand its processing, packaging and storage.
The project is supported with a $447,200 pay-as-you-go tax-incentive financing package. The package requires Phelps to employ 46 people by 2023 and 103 people by 2024. The package also requires Phelps to pay a livable wage to these employees over the next nine years. A living wage per the Madison Institute of Technology’s Living Wage Index is $20.82 per hour.
This announcement comes on the heels of Simmons Pet Food’s expansion into Iowa in 2021. Another Alliant Energy customer, Simmons invested $100 million in a 275,000-square-foot canned pet food operation. The first phase of its expansion plan saw incremental production capacity of 168 million units to its wet pet food business in July 2021. Earlier this year, Simmons added a second production line in Dubuque to bring total capacity to approximately 408 million units.
