Edgewater Generating Station

Alliant Energy takes next step in the company’s energy transition

MADISON, Wis. (May 23, 2024) – Today, Alliant Energy Corporation (NASDAQ: LNT) announced the next step in the company’s energy transition, which includes plans for filing a request to convert its coal-fueled Edgewater Generating Station to natural gas, paving the way for cleaner more sustainable energy solutions.

Alliant Energy, a leader in sustainable energy solutions, announces this significant milestone in furthering its commitment to customers, ensuring the company has continued access to cleaner, more reliable and affordable resources.

“We are pursuing the path that best bolsters continued reliability, drives affordability for all, supports our commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and ensures load growth availability that creates economic benefits in the communities we serve,” said David de Leon, Alliant Energy’s Wisconsin President and Senior Vice President of Operations.

Transitioning Edgewater from coal to natural gas, in part, takes into consideration, the complexities of the Midcontinent Independent System Operator’s (MISO) newly advanced seasonal construct and TC Energy’s announced plans to upgrade and extend its gas pipeline in parts of Wisconsin, including the Sheboygan area, where the Edgewater Generating Station is located, providing a unique opportunity to convert the facility.

By operating Edgewater past 2025, the facility retains more than 350 MW of capacity while the company maintains its clean energy vision to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the project will avoid an estimated $60 million in customer costs through 2030, directly tying to Alliant Energy’s commitment to deliver affordable energy to all customers.

“This evolution of our Wisconsin resource plan is the best option for meeting the future energy demands of our system in the state, providing critical capacity at the lowest cost to customers,” stated Alliant Energy’s president and CEO Lisa Barton. “With these changes, we remain committed to lowering carbon emissions, ensuring ongoing reliability and exiting coal in Wisconsin by the end of the decade.”

Alliant Energy is updating its resource plan to include improvements to the existing gas supply, storage and wind projects, along with adding new dispatchable gas and wind resources.

Since the company announced its Wisconsin Clean Energy Blueprint in 2019, Alliant Energy has:

  • Constructed and placed nearly 1,100 MW of solar into operation
  • Secured approval to add nearly 275 MW of battery storage
  • Placed the 150 MW Kossuth Wind Farm into operation
  • Received regulatory approval for improvements at the Neenah and Sheboygan Falls gas plants to provide greater reliability, capacity, and efficiency
  • Updated its emissions goals/commitment to include reducing all greenhouse gas emissions from utility operations

The conversion of Edgewater Generating Station from coal to natural gas generation is projected to take place during 2028 after receiving the necessary regulatory approvals. Once converted, the company expects to operate Edgewater to complement its significant renewable fleet.
