Tips for sustainable travel

Heading south for the winter? Visiting friends and family over the holidays? Wherever you’re headed, here are five tips on how to practice sustainability along the way.  

Tip #1: Skip the plastic. Make sure your packing list includes items like your favorite re-fillable water bottle as well as reusable straws, bags and utensils. These items help you save money and avoid using single-use plastics that take years to decompose in a landfill.

Tip #2: If you rent a car, opt for an electric or hybrid vehicle. Electric vehicles offer a wide range of benefits, like producing fewer carbon emissions. Check if your rental service offers electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles in their fleet. 

Tip #3: Check your accommodation's sustainability policy. More and more hotels, rental vacation homes and other tourist destinations now include sustainability information on their websites. Be on the lookout for single-use plastic reduction and renewable energy use.  

Tip #4: Find alternative transportation methods at your destination. Research your destination beforehand to see if they have a bike sharing service or public transportation options. Try exploring your destination on a light jog or a calming morning walk with a drink from a local café. 

Tip #5: Eat locally. Eating at locally owned restaurants is a fantastic way to practice sustainability. Your purchase supports the workers, suppliers and businesses in the community. There’s also a good chance that you’re eating in-season, locally sourced foods, which is better for the environment.  

You don’t have to stop with these tips! Continue to practice the sustainable lifestyle you’ve adopted at home and adjust your accommodation’s thermostat while you’re out exploring.  

While these tips may require a little extra effort on your part, practicing them helps the planet and encourages sustainable development in the travel industry.
