7 tips for a sustainable back-to-school season

It’s back-to-school season, the perfect time to think about ways to make your routine better for the environment. Here are seven ideas to consider.

1. Reuse and recycle school supplies.

Before you rush out with school supply lists in hand, take a look at what you already have. You might discover pens, notebooks and folders still in good shape from last year. Gather everything up, see what’s still usable, then make a list of what you really need. Not only will this save you some money, but it also helps reduce waste that would otherwise end up in a landfill.

2. Choose sustainably sourced school supplies.

If you need new supplies, consider sustainable options. Look for notebooks made from recycled paper, refillable pens and nontoxic highlighters. When possible, avoid plastic. Metal, wood and other natural materials are generally more sustainable and easier to recycle.

3. Check out local thrift stores for backpacks and clothing.

When it comes to backpacks and clothing, consider shopping at thrift stores, yard sales or organizing a clothing swap with friends. This way, you can refresh your wardrobe, save money and reduce waste.

4. Consider your route to school.

Transportation is a big part of global greenhouse gas emissions. If you live close to school, consider walking or biking. Carpooling and public transit are other great options.

5. Pack your lunch with reusable containers.

Swap out single-use items like plastic bags, utensils and water bottles for dishwasher safe, reusable containers. It’s a great way to reduce waste and save money in the long run.

6. Consider your options for electronic devices.

Computers and tablets have become essential items for many students. If you need a new device, consider refurbished options. Make sure to recycle old electronics properly. Practice energy saving habits like turning off devices when not in use to save more energy and money.

7. Get involved at school.

Many schools have sustainability programs or clubs. Getting involved is a great way to learn more about environmental issues and work with others to make your school more sustainable.

By making a few simple changes, we all contribute to a more sustainable back-to-school season. It’s all about being mindful of our choices and thinking about how they impact the planet.
