"On behalf of the Alliant Energy board of directors, I want to thank John for his outstanding leadership. His track record in delivering long-term value to customers, communities and shareowners is in no small part due to his strong foundation of service over the past 36 years,” said Carol Sanders, lead independent director of the board. “John’s many accomplishments include leading the company through its expansive renewable investment in wind and solar and more recently, establishing the company’s Purpose – serving customers and building stronger communities – which remains foundational to the company strategy. We are pleased he is remaining in his capacity as Board Chairman of Alliant Energy, where we will continue to benefit from his wisdom and experience.”
Sanders will remain in her role as lead independent director.
"As I reflect back on my first day with Alliant Energy in 1988, I am not sure I could have imagined the changes that the utility industry would experience over the following decades,” said Larsen. “Shifting market dynamics, changing customer expectations and emerging technologies all have shaped how we generate and deliver the energy our customers and communities count on. But the one thing that has been consistent is the ongoing commitment of our employees. I want to thank my colleagues for their collaboration and customer focus, which have strengthened the communities we proudly serve. I look forward to this next chapter and serving the company in my continued role as Board Chairman.”
Larsen joined the company in 1988 as an electrical engineer after receiving his degree at the University of North Dakota. Over his career at Alliant Energy, he held leadership roles in engineering, energy delivery and generation operations of the company. In 2004, he was promoted to Vice President. In 2010, Larsen was named Senior Vice President – Generation. At that time, he also became President of Wisconsin Power and Light Company.
In 2015, Larsen stepped into a new expansive role: leading the company’s efforts related to technology, development, generation construction, economic development, customer service and account management.
In recognition of his leadership, in 2018 Larsen was named President of Alliant Energy. As President, he had critical responsibilities – including leading the Technology and Strategic Planning functions – to help Alliant Energy respond more rapidly to opportunities and deliver greater value to customers. Later in 2018, Larsen was named President and Chief Operating Officer of Alliant Energy. In 2019, he was named CEO of Alliant Energy. As CEO, Larsen led the development of the company’s strategy to understand customers’ unmet needs more clearly. This work led to the creation of the company’s Clean Energy Blueprint, which remains a roadmap for the company’s continued investment in a cleaner, diverse energy mix – designed to bring long-term value to customers and communities.
