Just like batteries in a cell phone, laptop or car, utility-scale energy storage systems deliver electricity when we need it. Energy storage systems are typically charged by the grid or other generation resources like solar or wind. Often they charge at times of the day when excess energy is abundant or energy demand is low. Then they discharge when that energy is needed, such as hot summer days and cold winter nights.

Batteries are a well-known form of utility-scale energy storage. There are also other systems that employ mechanical, thermal or other energy storage technologies. These systems are rapidly evolving and engineers continue to develop new technologies that help further diversify grid resources and meet customer needs.

Energy storage systems are one way to ensure more reliable, cost-effective energy is available to all customers. These energy solutions add value and flexibility to our generation portfolio while complementing existing systems and resources. Just as we have a diverse energy mix, we also have a diverse mix of battery projects designed to serve a variety of functions.

Projects include powerful, grid-integrated systems to help meet peak customer energy demands as well as small, community-based projects designed to improve reliability, like our Boaz Microgrid. Together, these systems help enable a smarter, more resilient energy future.

In keeping with our sustainability goals, we develop decommissioning plans for all our energy sites and equipment. Battery units contain many valuable components and minerals that can be recovered and reused in new battery production. Our goal is to recycle or identify secondary markets for battery equipment at the end of the project life. In addition, federal and private investments are rapidly expanding commercial battery recycling efforts in the U.S.

Energy storage systems are a great complement to our diverse renewable generation portfolio. These systems are designed to deliver power when needed and operate without generating any airborne or water pollution.

As technology advances, we continue to prioritize sustainability and efficiency. Our systems are designed and built to withstand severe weather and disruptive environmental conditions. In fact, we have safely and efficiently operated battery systems across Iowa and Wisconsin for years through a wide range of weather events and extreme temperatures. Integrated heating and cooling systems, as well as newer battery designs, help ensure optimal performance and operation of these energy storage solutions no matter what Mother Nature throws our way.

Safety is always a top priority at Alliant Energy. Utility-scale energy storage systems, including batteries, have proven to be extremely safe when properly maintained and operated. Our highly skilled crews are trained to identify and prevent potential risks. We conduct extensive unit testing prior to operation to ensure our systems meet rigorous standards and are safe to operate.

We actively monitor our systems and have safety plans in place at all times. We communicate and partner with local fire departments and first responders to understand site layouts, facility features and safety plans. In the unlikely event of an issue at any of our energy storage facilities, we will respond rapidly and utilize available resources to keep communities safe.

Though rare, our operators are prepared to respond in real-time to any temperature fluctuations, anomalies in battery operation or fire risks. Our energy storage facilities include both on-site sensors and off-site monitoring. In addition, safety features and integrated fire suppression systems are designed to further mitigate potential risks. We work with local first responders and fire officials to coordinate any needed response in the unlikely event of a fire during both construction and operation of a project.

Cooling fans, transformers and other ancillary systems on site generate a low noise profile – generally comparable to a residential home air conditioning unit. The typical noise level from an operating battery storage site is minimal.

Like alkaline-based batteries in typical home devises, utility-scale batteries store chemical energy and do not emit any radiation. Properly designed and grounded batteries have no stray voltage.
